We have some beautiful crabapples we picked from my folks’ — they’re sweet and so good this year!

It was suggested we make an apple pie, with the crabapples — I thought that was a great idea, so we did!! Usually we cook the apples first and then toss it into the pie crust, but this time I mixed up the apples and dumped them into the pie crust the old fashioned way!
Today we are using a crust recipe from 1873 — you can find the pie crust recipe here! I share all about how to make the crust in that post along with the recipe!
Let’s get started!
Once the crust is ready, it’s time to prepare the apples. I sliced the crabapples into a large bowl, sprinkled them with granulated sugar and cinnamon so they don’t brown.

The apples are delicious eaten like this! Once you’re done, sprinkle with cornstarch and stir well.

Pour apples into crust. You can dot with butter if you like.

Dampen around edge of bottom crust. Place top crust over top and slit crust so steam can escape. Before I did, I cut out apple shapes for the vent holes.

Press with fork to seal.

Cut excess crust off.

Here’s the pie so far!

Brush crust with egg wash. We used one egg and 2 tablespoons of water whisked together. This will help brown the crust too.

I placed on the apple pie crust pieces on the pie that I had cut out, and my daughter sprinkled the pie with sugar.

Time to bake.

Bake at 375F for one hour or until apples are tender.

I was so pleased how the pie turned out in my new cast iron pie dish!!

Since it was so hot, we let it cool for the evening, and sliced it the next day.
The pie came out so easily from the cast iron dish!!

The crabapples make such a beautiful colored pie!!

It’s such a delightful pie and great with vanilla ice cream!

So good! And it fits perfectly with our pioneer days!
