We started doing a homemade Christmas in 2020 by giving homemade gifts to each other. I decided to give my girls a mix in a jar that they could make with me and then keep the recipe. Since then it’s been a tradition for me to do a mix in a jar and it’s a lot of fun.

This year, I gave my daughter ‘H’ this oatmeal molasses bread mix since she likes making bread with me. I always include the ingredients for the mix on the back of the recipe card so she can make it again. Sometimes I add ribbon or jazz up the jar and sometimes I do not, like this year.
It’s totally ok to give it like this. Perhaps if I was gifting it to a friend or hostess I would add ribbon and attach the recipe card with ribbon around the jar but for my girls, I did not want to hole punch the recipe card. It’s simple and old fashioned.

To make this in the jar, layer first 2-1/4 cups regular flour, then 3/4 cup whole wheat flour and 1 tsp salt (I mix it in just a bit) and then 1/2 cup oats. Simple.

To make the mix, add the jar to a bowl and add 1 tbsp instant yeast. Stir. Add 1-1/4 cups warm water, 2 tbsp oil and 2 tbsp molasses. Stir well. Once shaggy, knead the dough until no longer sticky. Sprinkle with a bit of flour if needed when kneading. Pour oil over top and place in a warm place to rise for one hour. Punch dough down. Shape and place on a greased pan or in a greased loaf pan. Let rise 30 minutes. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until golden and sounds hollow when tapped.

This bread is delicious — soft and fluffy and just a little sweet from the molasses. Definitely a bread I’ll make again!
