I love old recipes and trying different meals from time gone by, so I was ecstatic when I saw these corned beef fritters that Hannah made on her channel Real Vintage Dolls House — you can find the recipe she makes here! It’s a simple 1940s recipe using a handful of ingredients — canned corned beef, mashed potatoes and cooked onions. Then formed into patties and cooked. They’re actually delicious, and a meal I’ll definitely make again!
Since I decided to fry them in a skillet instead of baking them, they fell apart but I adjusted the recipe by adding flour which helped a lot, so the second batch turned out perfectly!
Let’s get started!
We are using this canned corned beef to make the corned beef fritters. Canned meat was affordable in the 1940s and was often turned into other meals like these fritters to help stretch the meat to feed a hungry family.

To start, we are going to cook onions in butter. If the pan goes dry, I will add water. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Peel 3 to 4 large potatoes. Boil potatoes until done. Drain and dump into a bowl.

Mash potatoes. Add corned beef.

Mash and mix together.

I added some water so the onions would cook through. We want them tender because they will not cook that much in the fritters or patties.

Add onions.

Mix well.

Form into patties, place in a heated pan with butter or lard. I used oil but it gave it a weird flavor. As the patties cooked, they fell apart. So I finished browning it and poured it into a bowl. It was delicious like this!

I added flour to the mixture and then made patties and dipped them into breadcrumbs. Then I fried the patties and they turned out much better.

These patties turned out great! And they taste delicious too!

We had our patties with carrots and homemade multigrain bread.

Corned Beef Fritters/Patties
1 – 340g can corned beef
3 to 4 large potatoes
1 small onion, diced
2 tbsp butter
1/4 cup flour
Boil potatoes until tender. Once cooked, drain potatoes, rinse in cold water and pour into bowl.
Place butter in pan with onions. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add a bit of water if pan goes dry and cook until soft and tender. Set aside.
Add potatoes to bowl. Mash potatoes. Add corned beef. Mix well. Add onions and flour. Season with salt and pepper.
Shape into patties. Dredge in crumbs. Place lard or butter in skillet. Once melted, place patties in skillet and cook a few minutes, until golden brown. Flip and cook on other side until browned. Remove from pan and continue until all patties are cooked. Serve with bread, mashed potatoes and vegetables of your choice.
