This delicious meal of meatballs and onion gravy reminds me of gramma’s hamburger gravy she made when we were kids. It’s made similarly but instead of cooking the ground beef, we are making it into meatballs. Then we will make a simple gravy from scratch using the drippings. I’m serving the meatballs and gravy with mashed potatoes but you can serve it over pasta, biscuits or even veggies. You can easily add mushrooms to the gravy if you like as well. We enjoy simple old fashioned-style meals like this!
Let’s get to it!
Combine ground beef, panko or bread crumbs, egg, mustard and seasonings.

Mix well.

Form into meatballs. My daughter decided to flatten them into mini patties.

Carefully place in heated skillet with lard or oil.

Fry on each side until golden brown.

Flip and cook until browned.

Remove to plate and continue until all patties are cooked.

Cook onion until tender. Add flour and powdered beef stock. You can also use liquid beef stock instead of water.

Mix well and cook about 1 to 2 minutes or until flour has been absorbed and smells nutty.

Add water slowly, mixing to combine to avoid lumps.

Cook for a few minutes. If too thick, add more water or stock.

I need to add more water. We also want extra gravy!

Taste for seasonings and adjust if necessary.

Add meatballs or patties to gravy.

Stir.

Cook 5 to 8 minutes or until bubbly, stirring occasionally.

Smells like gramma’s house!

Serve over mashed potatoes and with your favorite vegetables. So yummy!
